You must know that some States require Death Certificates to be issued within the past 12 months. For example, if you need a Massachusetts Apostille, the certificate must be within the past 12 months. If the Death Certificate is lost, damaged, or older than what the State will accept, we recommend that you order a new certified copy by visiting VitalChek.com

Death Certificate is generally requested when the family requests to settle the estate of the deceased in another country.  If the requesting country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, you will be required to provide a Death Certificate with an Apostille. The Apostille helps authenticate the document for acceptance in the other country.

Why do documents need to be apostilled?

An apostille certifies a document so that document can be recognized and accepted in other foreign countries that are also members of the 1961 Hague Convention Treaty. Think of it as mutual reciprocity between countries.

For non-Hague member countries (ex: France, Canada, China) you will instead receive an authentication certificate from the state or at the federal level. Then you will have to go through at least one or two more additional steps depending on the document and country to officially legalize the document.

Can I walk in for an apostille?

Yes, if you live in the Boston Massachusetts area or southern New Hampshire, then you can come to our office within our office hours and drop off your documents.

Can I apostille My Passport?

You can’t apostille your passport.

You can receive an apostille or authentication certificate once you make a copy of your passport then you get it properly notarized.

This depends on a few factors.

First, what country do you need to submit an apostille or authentication on your U.S passport copy to?

If the country is part of The Hague Convention you will receive a state-level apostille certificate from the secretary of state of where the notary you used to notarize your photocopy is licensed. If the country is not part of The Hague Convention you will receive a state-level authentication certificate from the state where the notary you used to notarize your photocopy is licensed.
