Who issues apostilles in Nevada

The Nevada Secretary of State issues apostilles for Nevada public documents and for documents notarized by Nevada notaries. Requests go to 401 North Carson Street, Carson City, NV 89701, with the signed Apostille/Certification Order Form and a fee of $20 per document, as verified in June 2026.

Payment is by money order or a major credit card, and in-person visits are arranged by appointment through the office. For tight deadlines, the Secretary of State offered 24-hour expedited service in June 2026 for an extra $75 per document. The office did not publish a standard turnaround at that time.

The office certifies signatures of Nevada officials, such as the county recorders and court clerks who certify marriage and divorce records, and of commissioned Nevada notaries. It cannot act on documents from other states, and federal records belong to the U.S. Department of State. If you married in Nevada but live in California today, the apostille still comes from Carson City, because the recorder who certified your certificate is a Nevada official.

For countries outside the Hague Convention, a Nevada document takes the certification and embassy legalization route instead, which we quote per country before you commit to anything.

Nevada documents we apostille

We apostille Nevada marriage certificates, divorce decrees, birth and death certificates, court orders, notarized documents, school records and business filings. Marriage and divorce records come from the county, birth and death certificates from the state or a health district, and company records from the Secretary of State.

• Birth and death certificates from the Office of Vital Records in Carson City, the Southern Nevada Health District or Northern Nevada Public Health. Start with our birth certificate or death certificate apostille guides.
• Notarized documents signed before a Nevada notary, including a power of attorney, an affidavit or a notarized passport copy.
• Diplomas and transcripts from Nevada schools, once they carry a signature the Secretary of State can certify. The school records apostille page explains the usual preparation.

Nevada requirements that trip people up

The Nevada requirements to get right are the order form, the payment method and the version of the marriage certificate. The Secretary of State wants its signed Apostille/Certification Order Form with every request, payment by money order or major credit card, and a certified copy from the county recorder rather than a keepsake.

Nevada treats the Apostille/Certification Order Form as mandatory. A request that arrives with only a cover letter, or with an unsigned form, is not a complete request. We complete the form from your order details so nothing is missing.

The recorder's certified copy, not the souvenir

A decorative certificate from the ceremony is not a public record, however official it looks. The document that can be apostilled is the certified copy issued by the county recorder after the marriage is recorded. Nevada's Office of Vital Records says marriage and divorce records are held at the county level, not by the state.

Notarized papers

For a power of attorney or an affidavit, the notary must hold a Nevada commission and complete the notarial certificate in full. A document notarized in Arizona or Utah goes to that state's apostille office instead.

Getting a certified copy in Nevada

Nevada birth and death certificates are issued by the Office of Vital Records, part of the Division of Public and Behavioral Health, at 4150 Technology Way, Suite 104, in Carson City, and by local offices such as the Southern Nevada Health District in Las Vegas and Northern Nevada Public Health in Reno.

As listed by the state in 2026, a birth certificate costs $25 in person in Carson City and a death certificate $22 to $25, while online orders through VitalChek run $45 for a birth certificate. The office answers at (775) 684-4242, no longer accepts faxed documents, and asks applicants to show a direct and tangible interest in the record.

Marriage and divorce records are different. The state office says they are held at the county level, so a certified marriage certificate or divorce decree is ordered from the county where the license was bought or the divorce was granted. The state can run a search for $10 when you do not know the county or date. Counties set their own fees, and the state's county contact sheet asks for a money order or cashier's check made out to the County Recorder. How long a Nevada apostille takes

Nevada did not publish a standard apostille turnaround when we verified it in June 2026, but it offered a 24-hour expedite for an extra $75 per document. In-person service is by appointment, so there is no drop-in counter to fall back on at the last minute.

The county step can take longer than the state step. If your certified marriage certificate has not been ordered yet, the recorder's processing and mail time come before anything reaches Carson City, so order the certified copy as early as you can.

The Nevada Secretary of State charged $20 per document when we verified it in June 2026, with 24-hour expedited service available for $75 more per document. Our $149.95 Economy and $199.95 Express packages include the standard $20 state fee.

Each package includes the free review, completing the order form, filing in Carson City, tracking and return mail. What is not included is the county's charge for a new certified copy, a certified translation if your country wants one, and international courier upgrades. Getting a Nevada apostille without visiting Carson City

You do not have to live near Carson City, or in Nevada at all, to get a Nevada apostille. Mail the certified copy to our Tewksbury, Massachusetts office, and we complete the order form, file with the Secretary of State and ship the apostilled document to you anywhere.
